Recently, the New York eHealth Collaborative along with the New York City Investment Fund and the NYS Department of Health, launched the New York Digital Health Accelerator (NYDHA) to fund 12 early- and growth-stage companies that are developing cutting-edge technology products in care coordination, patient engagement, analytics, and message alerts for healthcare providers.

The 9 month program will provide up to $300,000 of funding per company from a syndicate of leading venture capital and strategic investors, along with direct mentorship and feedback from senior-level executives at a broad network of provider organizations in New York State.

Eighteen highly influential healthcare provider organizations are participating in the program, including New York Presbyterian, NYU Medical Center, Albany Medical Center, and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.

The deadline to apply is Friday, June 1.

A disturbing story: medical student arrested for soliciting sex from a teenager

Here's a disturbing story about how an Albany Medical College student used Craigslist to solicit sex from a teenager. According to the TimesUnion.com:

Daniel P. Heeren, 24, of Carstead Drive, Slingerlands, was arrested Aug. 6 after a Bethlehem police officer posed as a teenage boy online, and Heeren allegedly set up a place to meet to have sex with what he thought was a teenager.

I've used Craigslist to buy and sell things. It really is a great resource, but it's such a shame to see how it's being misused by young people. You may remember that Philip Markoff, a Boston University medical student (and premed graduate of the University at Albany), was arrested in April as the alleged "Craigslist Killer." Boston Police said he was using the online classified site to lure prostitutes to hotels to rob them.

Run a half-marathon and help a child through the Fresh Air Fund

When I was a student at MIT, I ran the Boston marathon as a bandit (unofficial, non-qualified runner). I wasn't a runner. I just wanted to give it a try and I finished it in 4 hours. "Heartbreak Hill" was brutal. If you enjoy running, perhaps you'd consider running the NYC half-marathon next month. It's a relatively flat run (so you won't have to worry about a heartbreak hill experience). You can help children while you're at it. The Fresh Air Fund is looking for runners and sponsors to join the Fresh Air Fund-Racers team for the NYC Half-Marathon on August 16th. http://freshair.org/racers

Last summer's NYC Half-Marathon was a huge success and the Fresh Air Fund-Racers raised more than $125,000.

Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences in the country to more than 1.7 million New York City children from disadvantaged communities. Each year, thousands of children visit volunteer host families in 13 states and Canada through the Friendly Town Program or attend Fresh Air Fund camps.

The Fresh Air Fund is also still in need of Friendly Town hosts for next month. Host families open their hearts and home to a NYC child who would not otherwise have the opportunity to escape the hot, crowded city streets.

6th U.S. Swine Flu Death and More NY Schools Closing

CNN is reporting that 5 more U.S. schools are closing because of swine flu (or because they fear the spread of swine flu). Meanwhile, MSNBC indicates that H1N1 is everywhere. MedPageToday says that the 6th U.S. death related to swine flu was a New York educator Mitchell Wiener, assistant principal at Intermediate School 238 in Queens, NY. Do you think the schools in NY are overreacting?

Global Hysteria?

I've been writing about swine flu for several days and I wish to make one thing very clear: It is not my intent to increase national or global hysteria about swine flu. However, I want people to be aware of the POSSIBILITIES that may be associated with a true pandemic (which is another way of saying global epidemic).

Right now, we haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg. We're only seeing a tiny ice cube floating on the ocean. If things stay that way, then we have nothing to worry about. However, if things erupt around the world, then we'll see a massive iceberg come out of the sea.

I've been following swine flu on CNN and the latest is that there are 787 global cases of confirmed H1N1 and places like South Korea are sanitizing airports after a single identified case.

Meanwhile, the CDC is tracking the number of cases in each state. As of May 3, there are 226 cases. This means that almost 1/3 of the confirmed cases are in the USA. Why is that a big deal? Because people from all over the world travel to and from the USA. We are a major international travel hub. As the summer approaches, we will see a rise of tourists and other travelers. New York now has 63 confirmed cases. Yesterday, NY had 50. If there's one US city that attracts international tourists, it's NYC. We're already in May and schools are about to enter summer break. College students will be traveling home. We're about to see a major surge in domestic travel as well.

Anthrax was a scare, but it isn't transmitted as easily as the flu. SARS was a really big scare (especially because I knew friends living in Hong Kong), but Hong Kong isn't the type of major international travel hub like the USA.

Here in the U.S., we have a large supply of anti-viral therapies like Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir). Do other countries have the supply like we do? How much do these anti-viral therapies impact the course of the disease? It's probably too early to know the answer to that question. However, it may not be unreasonable to think that anti-viral therapy may be one of the reasons why mortality in the U.S. hasn't been as high as Mexico (but I don't have any scientific evidence to support that statement).
