HIMSS Launches mHIMSS
Transforming Healthcare with Mobile Technology, HIMSS Launches mHIMSS
mHIMSS serves the many healthcare stakeholders who have access to mobile technology, to help better serve patients with improved quality of care
Mobile technology is transforming healthcare and has the ability to revolutionize healthcare delivery in the US and abroad.
Recognizing that trend, HIMSS launches its new initiative, mHIMSS, to lead healthcare transformation through the best use of mobile technology and equip healthcare stakeholders with the knowledge and tools they need to harness the potential of mobile. Thus, care may be improved, safety and access to care increased, and costs better controlled. The HIMSS Board of Directors unanimously approved this new initiative.
“With mHIMSS, we can engage the many healthcare stakeholders, such as clinicians, payers and consumers, who have access to mobile technologies and use it to better serve patients with improved quality, access, and cost-effectiveness of care,” said Edna Boone, MA, CPHIMS, Senior Director, Mobile Health Initiatives, HIMSS. Boone explained 72 percent of US physicians have a smart phone with that number expected to reach more than 80 percent in 2012, according to May 2010 Trends in Mobile Medicine, Smart Phone Apps for Physicians, published in FirstWordSM Dossier. “With the many mobile options available to healthcare providers and other stakeholders, mHIMSS will address related operations, security, policy, and legal and integration capabilities related to mobile technology use, workflow issues, and data exchange in the healthcare system,” said Boone.

First NIH mHealth Summer Institute in 2011
What are you doing this summer? Maybe you could spend it at the first NIH mHealth Summer Institute.
The National Institutes of Health today announced the creation of the first NIH mHealth, or mobile health, Summer Institute. Scheduled for the summer of 2011, this week-long workshop will bring together leaders in mobile health technologies, behavioral science researchers, federal health officials and members of the medical community to provide early career investigators with an opportunity to learn about mHealth research. The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), part of NIH, partnered with Qualcomm, a developer of wireless technologies, to cosponsor the course.
Mobile technologies have the potential to transform medical research and enable health care providers to more rapidly and accurately assess biological processes, behavior, attitudes, and the environment. These technologies also allow providers to help patients improve their health in real time—enabling them to personalize health care options and monitor progress.

Developing a CME activity that discusses health IT, mobile health, and social media
Last Friday, I had the opportunity to record several videos with two phenomenal physicians: Enoch Choi, MD, and Mike Sevilla, MD. You probably already know them because they're very active in the world of social media:

Enoch Choi, MD
Twitter: @enochchoi

Mike Sevilla, MD
Twitter: @doctoranonymous
We're currently working on a series of certified CME/CE activities that will include discussions around health information technology, electronic health records, mobile health, and social media.
Stay tuned for more details. Once these activities are released, we'll be discussing them on Sermo and I hope you'll join us for that dialogue.

A Nice Collection of Connected/Mobile Medical Devices from MWC
Author: Riley Alexander, MD, MBA
This is more of a re-post of an article TechCrunch posted here, but it seemed like such a nice collection of video segments of mobile medical devices from the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (something I would love to attend), in Barcelona, that I wanted to pass it along to our readers who have not seen it.

Developing a successful mHealth app – insights into a pharmaceutical company
Here are some snippets from a recent blog post on research2guidance titled, "What does it take to develop a successful mHealth app – insights into a pharmaceutical company."
[This guest post was written by Alexander Romantschuk, Innovations Leader, Lilly Germany, Alexander studied molecular and surface physics at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. Since November 2005 he has held the position of European Medical Innovations Leader at Eli Lilly. Here he was responsible for numerous prototypes for internal medical clients. Since mid-2009 his team has been working on mobile devices and mobile applications. He is sharing his experience of the development of mHealth apps in a regulated health care environment. ]
Mobile app development – a field report from a pharmaceutical company
The pharmaceutical industry is highly regulated. The main reason for these regulations is to protect the consumer; patients who need to take drugs. Buzzwords like GxP, CRF Part 11, Data Privacy, Compliance, Regulatory and IT Validation are used regularly if an IT application is developed. From an IT process point of view there is no reason to distinguish between the developments of a normal web application or an application for a mobile device but in reality people’s minds make a big difference. Smartphones, mobile broadband and availability are still ‘new’ and especially for the conservative pharmaceutical industry it isn’t that easy to adopt these new concepts.
Legal, compliance and regulatory approvals
What about legal, compliance and regulatory approvals? As mentioned above the pharmaceutical industry is highly regulated. To answer questions around promotional material, copyright, contracts, disclaimer, data privacy, compliance to laws and regulations you need to get in contact with your legal and compliance department to gain approvals. In the end we have all the necessary approvals to go ahead. An important point for an international company is the understanding of different laws and regulations in different countries. If you desire to replicate an existing regulated app from Germany to Spain for instance, you need to contact your local Compliance, Legal and Regulatory department to answer the same question again based on local laws. That is a cumbersome and time consuming process.
