Do you Google physicians?
People used to have much more privacy before the days of the Internet. Now, anyone can "be out there" if they're tech-savvy enough to set up a web page or a blog. If you have a rather unusual name, then it's easier than ever to market yourself on a search engine. If you have a very common name (I'm a perfect example: Joe Kim), then it may be more difficult to market your presence on the Internet unless you're very intentional and deliberate about your efforts.
I find that many patients look up their physicians on Google. They even use Facebook (often pressured by their kids to be "cool" - but don't add me as your friend mom/dad!) - so you must be cautious when using social media outlets and posting personal pictures, videos, and stories. As more physicians leverage social media and put themselves "out there" on the Internet, they must use caution and discernment so that they avoid trouble like this example: Facebook misconduct by medical students

Dr. Joseph Kim in the news
My name is so common that you may think that it appears in the news all the time. The truth is that I don't see my name appearing too often. Without the "Dr." or "M.D." the name "Joe Kim" or "Joseph Kim" is ubiquitous. When I was in college, I knew 3 other people in my social network who shared my name.
Let's talk about "Joseph Kim" in the news (and yes, this will be medically relevant):
Let's talk about "Joseph Kim" in the news (and yes, this will be medically relevant):
- There's a young golfer named Joseph Kim (age 21) who may end up becoming really popular someday. He's not a doctor yet, but maybe he'll aspire to become one someday.
- Then there's J. Joseph Kim, PhD (CEO of Inovio Biomedical Corporation) who's working on a swine flu (H1N1) vaccine and you'll be seeing his name all over the Internet. Like me, he's an MIT alum.
- S. Joseph Kim, MD (Division of Nephrology, Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario) recently published an article in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology titled, "H-Y Incompatibility Predicts Short-Term Outcomes for Kidney Transplant Recipients."
- Finally, Joseph Kim, MD (a cancer specialist and surgeon at the City of Hope medical center) has been in the news for treating Steve Jobs (pancreatic cancer).

The evolution of my blogs
When I started blogging several years ago, I had a single Blogspot URL. I was writing about medicine, technology, gadgets, computers, and non-clinical opportunities for healthcare professionals. I also threw in some blog posts about completely random topics like the ubiquitous nature of a name like Joe Kim or Joseph Kim.
Earlier this year, I decided that my blog was getting too convoluted. In March/April 2009, I made a decision to secure a few novel URLs. I also decided to get serious about using Twitter.
Now I have four separate and distinct blogs. Perhaps someday if I become a professional blogger, I'll set up a few other URLs. In the meanwhile, I'll do my best to maintain these four sites:

Joe Kim on Facebook
Wow, how many people named Joe Kim are on Facebook? I'm never surprised by how many people I find with my name (of course, they probably think that I have their name). Whether it's Joe Kim or Joseph Kim, there are way too many of us on this planet. Why couldn't our parents be more original and give us more unique names? After all, the last name Kim is the most common surname in Korea.

Google: Joe Kim
Total tangent: In the last 30 days, I've had more page visits from Google by people searching for "Joe Kim."
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? There are so many people out there who are named Joe Kim that I have no idea who they're trying to find. The average pages/visit is 4.17 for Joe Kim and 1.76 for Joseph Kim. The average time on the site for Joe Kim is 10 minutes while the average time for Joseph Kim is only 4 minutes.
Here's the bottom line: more people go by the name "Joe" even if their legal/technical name is "Joseph." So, it's more common for people to know someone called (not named) Joe Kim rather than Joseph Kim. There's my 30 second thesis on this issue.

What is my blog about?
Some people have recently asked me what my blog is about. My blog isn't a focused blog on a single topic. My blog is really about me - my personal passions about healthcare and technology. I love to use gadgets for work-related professional and personal purposes. I see how new technology may impact the healthcare system. I also think about how innovations in mobile technology and gadgets may ultimately assist healthcare professionals to deliver more efficient care.
So, what's my blog about? It's about technology and healthcare from both a consumer and a professional perspective.
