Are infant slings causing baby deaths?

I actually bought a baby sling for my wife a few months ago. She tried it for a day and didn't like it, so I returned it to Babies R Us. It's hard to imagine what it must be like to grieve the loss of a baby.

There's a story on CNN titled, "Grieving mothers blame baby slings for infant deaths."  Here are the story highlights:

• Two mothers blame Infantino "SlingRider" for their infants' deaths in 2009
• Infantino issued a recall Wednesday of two baby slings, offering replacement slings
• Recall includes more than 1 million slings sold in U.S., Canada, Europe
• U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says it identified 14 deaths with sling-style carriers

According to the article: Earlier this month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning about the use of certain baby slings, saying it had identified 14 deaths with sling-style carriers, most of them in children younger than 4 months. On Tuesday, Health Canada issued a joint statement with the agency, saying three of the deaths appeared to occur in one of Infantino's slings.

HPV vaccine probably did not cause sudden death in this young girl

A young girl receives an HPV vaccine at school and then suddenly dies. Was the vaccine the cause of sudden death? In this case, it appears that Natalie Morton (age 14) had a serious medical condition and even a large tumor in her chest. According to a news story on Medscape:

preliminary postmortem revealed that she had "a serious underlying medical condition which was likely to have caused death," according to Caron Grainger, MD, joint director of public health in Coventry.

Regardless, several health authorities in the United Kingdom announced that they were temporarily suspending their HPV vaccination programs.

This story on the BBC reveals that this girl had a large infiltrating tumor in her chest and this tumor was affecting her heart and her lungs. Since both are vital organs, it's possible that the timing of the vaccine simply had nothing to do with her death. In any case, this is a sad story and my heart goes out to her family and loved ones.
