Over the weekend, my wife and I were at a picnic where we were with several other physicians. We somehow stumbled upon the topic of electronic health records (EHRs). Most of these physicians are in small medical practices. Some are specialists and others work in primary care. I mentioned that Practice Fusion is a free EHR that includes capabilities like e-Prescribing and these physicians had never heard of the concept of a free EHR.
The funny thing is that doctors are accustomed to free things. Drug reps would bring free lunches. They even used to bring free pens and stethoscopes (although those days are now over). We still get free CME and if you participate in market research activities, then you may get a free Amazon gift card or a free iPod. We have free medical software for smartphones (like Epocrates). So, why is the concept of a free EHR surprising?

Sounds like my kind of picnic! Thanks for spreading the word, Dr. Kim.
