Physician Executive Forum debuts at #HIMSS11

ORLANDO – Healthcare executives may think they know all about meaningful use of health IT, but the harsh reality is that one missed opportunity could end up costing millions of dollars and affect healthcare delivery.

To help executives get a firm grasp on this hot-button topic, HIMSS11 is introducing the Physician Executive Forum, an event that spans the Physician IT Symposium and general education sessions.

HIMSS officials say the forum is unlike any other event of its kind, offering medical executives from enterprise settings a chance to gather and discuss issues ranging from meaningful use and healthcare reform to the upcoming conversion to 5010 and ICD-10 code sets.

Registration includes entrance to all general education sessions as well as access to physician poster sessions and exhibit halls, and exclusive, guided tours of the exhibition area.

The track begins with the “Physicians IT Symposium: Successes and Scars in Achieving Meaningful Use,” taking place Sunday, Feb. 20. The symposium begins in Room 414A with a welcome from Brian Jacobs, chairman of the HIMSS Physician Community leadership Committee and executive director of the Center for Pediatric Information at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, from 8:30-8:45 a.m., and is followed by a keynote from Farzad Mostashari, deputy national coordinator, Program and Policy, Office of the National Coordinator from 8:45-9:45 a.m. He’ll provide attendees with an update on the ONC’s efforts to advance meaningful use regulations, as well as discussing the uncertainties of certification.

Following the keynote, attendees will be treated to four hour-long sessions:

• A Meaningful Use Panel Discussion: Tackling the MU Requirements, from 9:45-10:45 a.m., features William Bria, CMIO, Shriners Hospital for Children; Anthony Berliner, medical director, Allina Hospitals and Clinics’ Excellian Inpatient program; and Dean Sittig, professor, University of Texas Health Science Center.

• A Successful Dashboard: A Davies Award Winner’s Story, from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., features Bertram Reese, senior vice president and CIO, Sentara Healthcare.

• Innovative Uses of Electronic Health Data: Driving Value out of EHR, from 1:45-2:45 p.m., features Christopher Chute, professor, Biomedical Informatics, Mayo Clinic, and founder of the clinic’s Division of Biomedical Informatics.

• Accountable Care Organization: Leveraging Clinical IT to bring Value to the ACO, from 3-4 p.m., features Barry Bershow, vice president, Quality, Fairview Health Services, and Harold Wolf, senior vice president and COO, Permanente Federation.

The symposium concludes with a wrap-up and closing comments from 4-4:30 p.m.

From Monday through Thursday, Feb. 21-23, physician executives are invited at attend specially designated educational sessions in the ARRA/Meaningful Use track or physician executive-focused topics in other tracks.

Symposium attendees have a chance to view the physician poster session, which will be displayed in the foyer throughout the day.
