Children’s Hospital Boston reaches Stage 7

HIMSS Analytics Honors Children’s Hospital Boston with Stage 7 Award

The HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award honors hospitals that operate in a paperless environment and represent best practices in implementation of the EMR

CHICAGO (December 7, 2011) - HIMSS Analytics announced Children’s Hospital Boston received its Stage 7 Award. The hospital will be recognized at the 2011 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on Feb. 20-24, 2011 in Orlando, Fla. The award represents attainment of the highest level on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM), which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems. As of November 2010, HIMSS Analytics had recognized 52 hospitals, or 1 percent of the more than 5,000 hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database, with its Stage 7 Award.

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), hospitals can review the implementation and utilization of information technology applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process that confirms a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit conducted by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current CIOs to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

"We're thrilled to be recognized as a Stage 7 institution - it represents the collaborative work and investment of our entire organization towards achieving a more integrated, safer and more efficient way of delivering care to our patients, using information technology. And though we have achieved quite a bit already, we are committed to continuing to improve our systems and processes to further improve clinical outcomes, and to provide increasingly safer and more patient-centered care," said Daniel Nigrin, MD, MS, Senior VP for Information Services & Chief Information Officer, Children's Hospital Boston.

“We congratulate Children’s Hospital Boston on achieving the Stage 7 recognition,” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, Organizational Services, for HIMSS. “Other healthcare organizations can study and emulate these EMR applications to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes because the accomplishments of Stage 7 hospitals serve as important indicators of high quality patient care with the interoperable electronic medical record in place.”
