Google Webmaster Tools Data

Thanks to Google, I have access to some interesting data regarding search statistics on Google. Traffic to my blog may be tiny compared to others, but I find it interesting that certain unanticipated words lead to my blog. Do you use Google to search the internet? Maybe you use Yahoo?

It makes sense that both Epocrates and BlackBerry come up so high, since my blog covers much about technology, gadgets, and handheld devices. The BlackBerry Storm has been a popular device recently, so many people have been writing about that. How are clinicians liking the Storm?

Here's some search data from Google. I will only list the top 10 as of January 1, 2009

Networking in 2009

Do you plan to expand your social network this year? If you do, here are some practical tips that may help, from Andrea Santiago at About.com

http://healthcareers.about.com/od/gettingthejob/a/Networking.htm

Start a blog. Join LinkedIn. Participate in a forum.

Participating in Forums

Do you participate in any online forums? This is a great way to network, but you should be cautious and only sign up for forums that are truly legitimate. Sermo is a great forum for physicians. There are other forums out there, like Student Doctor Network. Online forums and blogs are some of the core elements that compose Web 2.0

As the internet becomes more interactive, join social networking sites and participate in forums. You may find some valuable information and also meet some interesting people.

If you're a physician, why don't you join Sermo?

Happy New Year! Welcome 2009

As we start 2009, I'd like to wish all our readers a Happy New Year! I personally think 2009 will bring some significant advances in healthcare technology. This will be seen in hardware - ranging from personal computers, handheld devices/PDA/smart phones, medical instruments and devices, and many others. We will also see a stronger shift into healthcare/public health IT as more hospitals and physicians embrace EHR/EMR systems and rely more on computers to improve patient health.

Would a really large iPod touch be the perfect medical tablet?

There are floating rumors about a really large iPod touch. I mean a screen that might be 7 or even 9 inches! Would such a device be the Newton Messagepad that everyone dreamed of several years ago when all the physician technologists carried one in our pocket? (Yes, I was one of them with my Apple Newton MP2100 in my white coat pocket and my MIT brass rat on my finger).

I think it will really depend on the screen technology and the processing power. Add a touch screen or an active digitizer to the capacitive touch display, and you may have a great platform for most medical EHR/EMR software solutions. Plus, add the ability to run XP/Vista/Windows 7 and it will be a welcome addition to any doctor's office. However, I doubt that such a device would be called an iPod. Now you've built the Apple Tablet that would be a dual-boot Mac OS X /Windows with BootCamp.

I think 2009 will bring some exciting new gadgets that will take healthcare to the next level. More clinicians will be comfortable using touch-screen devices and EHR/EMR vendors will be creating CCHIT certified solutions that will be leveraging all the advances in hardware such as SSD, faster processors, and unique screen input technologies.

I'm very eager to see the Apple Tablet once it finally rolls out. Will we see it in 2009? I still miss using my Apple Newton Messagepad.

New OQO at CES

Soji's List

For those of you interested in an industry position, take a look at Soji's List. Chief Soji is a fictitious name, but claims to be a US-trained industry physician. Anyone know how Chief Soji actually is?

Do you plan to transition to a non-clinical career in 2009?

Windows 7 build 7000

Is this the official beta release of Windows 7? Build 7000? I've been testing Windows 7 build 6956 and it's been working fine so far. I was not impressed when I installed it on my Samsung Q1 Ultra UMCP.

I'm eager to see how build 7000 performs. If it's similar to 6956 (which is what I suspect), then I don't think it will be suitable for an under-powered UMPC like my Samsung Q1 Ultra. However, if it's more similar to XP (which I doubt), then I may be pleasantly surprised. In the meanwhile, I will continue to test Windows 7 on some old machines.

What Are the Best FREE EHRs for 2009?

Which EHR or EMR solution will be the best options for 2009?

Some questions to consider, include:
  • CCHIT certified?
  • Advertisements?
  • ASP (or web-based)?
  • Stable company?

Perhaps the bigger question is: What is the viability of FREE solutions in this economy?

Writing Jobs

Disclaimer: I don't know much about this site, but I stumbled upon it and thought that it might be useful to some clinicians who are looking for some freelance medical writing opportunities:

Healthcare Jobs: PhysicianCrossroads.com

I recently receive an e-mail newsletter from this job site called PhysicianCrossroads.com

I've only taken a glance, but the website looks more like a portal for many different recruiters, hospitals, and organizations. Also, it appears like the portal lists jobs for many different types of healthcare professionals. Hence, if you're looking for a new opportunity, it may be worth exploring.

Sony P Series Vaio Netbook

Could this be the Sony P series Vaio netbook? (or will Sony call this a Pocketbook?) The Sony Vaio Pocket netbook?

Multiple images of this new computer have leaked all over the internet. Could this be the final product? An ultra-wide screen device that has a tiny keyboard? It looks like it will easily fit into a ladie's clutch purse and may even have the footprint of a standard envelope.

I've been a fan of the Sony Vaio series. I have an older T series notebook that has a 10.5" screen, a built-in DVD drive, and is very light and compact. Sony products can be a bit more expensive, but the build quality is superb. If Sony comes out with a netbook, how will it be priced? What operating system will it run? Early specs suggest an Intel Atom processor, an SSD option, and a high-resolution display.

Is This the Sony Vaio P Series Netbook? Or Pocketbook?

Will Sony call the P series Vaio a netbook or a pocketbook?

Could This be the Sony Vaio P Netbook?

I have a great little Sony Vaio T series notebook. It's small, has a built-in DVD drive, and is very light. Now, Sony is about to release the new P series. However, many people are wondering what this new thing is going to look like. Could this be the new Sony P series Vaio netbook? Will this even be called a netbook or something else? Sony has been teasing us with other pictures, so I'm eager to see the final product.
